Clouds drifted up the valley separating us from the Shira Ridge to the west.
It's good to get to camp.
Kilimanjaro's western slopes were a great backdrop to Shira Camp.
At an elevation of around 12,600', we were already higher than I had ever camped. Temperatures dropped a bit more at night.
Day 3. After another night of storms, we packed up in the rain and headed east.
We went ahead and got good and wet before climbing up into the snow.
Snow line was about 13,000'.
Terri picks her way through lava rocks under snow.
It just got colder and colder as we gained elevation.
Terri breaks into a stash of cashews for a snack.
This segment of the trek was the first time I had ever ascended above 15,000'.
After lunch, we had to cross this valley - man I hate to lose elevation! Note the line of climbers headed up the other side.
The path down was nasty and sapped a lot of strength.
