In February 2011 Terri and I visited friends in Tanzania, who invited us to a Kilimanjaro climb.

At our friends' house in Dar Es Salaam.

We flew to the town of Moshi, then started our trek at the Machame Gate.

Heading up the road on the first part of the Machame Route.

We started as a team of 12. All but one of us live near sea level.

Up through the rain forest.

Porters carried our food and tents. Dinner at Machame Camp (elevation 9950') hit the spot.

Terri implied that the food was better than the freeze dried cuisine that I usually prepare.

Day 2. We woke to rain, which would become a common theme and made the early going a little slick.

The porters were impressive. Made me feel guilty about obsessing over backpack design.

Pretty views above tree line.

In the afternoon Kilimanjaro's slopes came into view to the northeast.

Nice views to the west as well.
